Puerto Rico has a number of landmarks that have great significance as regards the history of this land. These memorials and monuments that recount past history lie among the 78 municipalities of this island.
Forts in Vieques and El Morro
El Fortin Conde de Mirasol (Fuerte de Vieques) is a fort in Vieques, built in the year 1845. It houses the Vieques Museum of Art and History. The Vieques Historic Archives here has a wide collection of documents related to Vieques’ history. El Morro is another popular Puerto Rican landmark that houses leftovers of the past 16th century Spanish fortress, and maintains a museum inside. The structure was designed to protect the Old San Juan fort from intense attacks of the sea. Most of the historically important places and monuments of this island are concentrated in this area.
Iglesia San Miguel Arcángel Church and San Juan Cathedral
Constructed in 1783, this age old, Roman Catholic parish church situated in Cabo Rojo is a prominent landmark of Puerto Rico. The church is a part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mayagüez and has been designated as a historical monument by the government of this island. Visit to the San Juan Cathedral will be a spiritual as well as interesting experience. This second oldest cathedral in the western hemisphere, constructed in 1521, is an antique building in San Juan. The mortal remains of Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer and settlement founder, are entombed in this cathedral. It is also outstandingly impressive in its architectural style.
Important Puerto Rican Landmarks where History Comes Alive
History comes alive in many Puerto Rico landmarks including La Casa del Libro (the museum of art and history books), Ballaha Barracks (museum of America’s highlights) and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture La Fortaleza (the oldest governor’s mansion). Notable structures like Arecibo Observatory, Caguana Ceremonial Center, Cruceta El Vigía are some other must visit landmarks of Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico invites many visitors, with its extensive, interesting landmarks and other wonderful tourist attractions.
